A DRUID EXPLAINS SODOM AND GOMORRAH
This Druid tells us the story of Sodom and Gomorrah and explains why the two cities weren't punished because of gay people. However, he seems to go off into looney land at the end.

Far be it for me to criticize a Druid, but this guy is picking and choosing from the Bible instead of including all of scripture to come up with the larger picture. Mainly, he's speaking in generalities off the top of his head and I guarantee you a fundamentalist Bible Thumper would crush him.

I'm in agreement with him that I think the story of Sodom and Gomorrah is, if anything, a lesson about mistreating strangers. That kind of makes sense if you view the story as a fable. But we can't know for sure. The problem with mythology is that it may not always have a clear lesson because those who originally told the story didn't consider it to be mythology, they thought it was history--a real event. Or was it a real event that was mythologized?

Most likely what happened is that for whatever reason Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed in a way that appeared miraculous or God-like. Then it was up to the teachers of the Jewish People to explain why. The mistreatment of strangers is one idea. Sodom and Gomorrah turning into a gay bathhouse is another. I would have to ask why it couldn't be both? Why couldn't S & G be condemned because of homosexuality and the mistreatment of strangers?

The reason I suggest this is that this Druid and others are acting like this Biblical narrative is supposed to make sense. And if you want supporting evidence of homophobia in the Bible you don't have to read much further than Leviticus. To suggest that the writers of Sodom and Gomorrah weren't homophobes or did not live in homophobic times with a "homophobic Old Testament God" is an attempt to apply modern tolerance onto a past of intolerance.

Being that I'm an atheist I have no stake in making the Bible tolerant. Because as a whole it isn't . You can try to make Sodom and Gomorrah about something else than just gay sin, however, what about the rest of the Bible? Jesus didn't comment on homosexuality (because he probably was gay anyhow) but Paul did. And God talked directly to Paul. Seems like God could have cleared up his position right there.

So in this instance I think both sides are wrong because I don't think there is a clear answer on Sodom and Gomorrah. What heterosexual Christians should concentrate on is Lot's actions in offering up his daughters to be raped. Seems like that's worse than a little man on man action.
